One would never suspect that the Sonora Desert is home to more than 100 species of freshwater fish. Though much of their natural habitat has been lost over the past 100 years, Arizona boasts about 30 native species of fish. Unfortunately, at least two–thirds are listed as threatened or endangered. Threats to Sonoran fish come from irrigation diversion, dams, overuse of available water by humans, and introduced species. Becoming involved in conservation efforts, ensuring that large tracts of habitat are available to native species, and curbing the environmental effects of farming and urban sprawl are all important steps to preserving these species. More importantly, we must take personal responsibility for our choices and their impact on the environment. |
