My inspiration - my grandmother's handmade rug. I am second generation Canadian, my heritage is Russian. 'The Spirit Wrestlers', Doukhobor immigrants, played a vital role in settling the Canadian west. With assistance from Leo Tolstoy and the Quakers 7500 immigrants arrived between 1899 and 1902 fleeing persecution from the Czar for their pacifist beliefs. They flourished for decades, a productive, creative and religious community holding their history sacred but now integrated into the fabric of the Canadian landscape. |
